Before the LASIK procedure, you should have a thorough eye examination. You should also understand the procedure correctly, ask any questions you have from your eye doctor, and know what price you will pay for the procedure. You will be required to sign an informed consent form before the procedure. You are within your rights to ask for a copy of the informed consent form before you undergo the procedure, to thoroughly understand the possible risks. This is not normal in India, but you can ask for it if you feel it necessary.
If you wear contact lenses, you must not wear lenses for a certain period before the procedure. If you wear soft contact lenses, you must keep away for lenses for 7 days before the procedure. If you wear semi-soft or hard contact lenses, a period of 2-3 away from contact lenses is necessary. This is because contact lenses change the shape of the cornea, and you want the corneal shape to return to normal, before contemplating LASIK.
Your eye doctor may also require you to put prophylactic (preventive) antibiotic drops for one or two days before the procedure. He/She may also require you to start treatment for dry eyes before the procedure.
On the day of the procedure, go along with at least one friend/relative, who will be able to drive you back home. Depending on the time of day, eat a light meal-don’t go hungry but don’t go overboard on food either. Make sure you inform your eye surgeon if you have any redness, burning or itchiness in the eye just before the procedure.
Come to the laser center rested and relaxed.
You should allow 2 hours at the Laser Center. Wear comfortable clothing. Do not wear makeup, earrings, hair spray, perfume or cologne on the day of your laser procedure.
